Artishoke Seeds

An artichoke is a thistle-like plant with edible buds, which should be harvested before they mature into flowers. It has the curious phenomenon of touch sensitive stamens; when touched, for example with a bee's tongue or leg, the stamens contract and a pinch of white pollen is released from the stamens.

Artischoke as a vegetable

The fleshy bracts of the closed flower bud are eaten as a vegetable. For this cultivation, thornless plants are used, which are vegetatively propagated. After harvesting, the flower stem is cut off the plant. The plants should be kept frost-free in winter by covering them with straw and plastic or leaves.
