Lavender is a plant that probably reminds you of the beautiful lavender fields in the south of France. This beautiful purple plant looks great in any garden.
Lavender in the vegetable garden
Lavender is of course very welcome in the vegetable garden. Especially for the bees that this plant attracts. This is important for maintaining biodiversity in the garden. You can make some wonderful homemade bath oils from lavender or tea.
When to sow lavender?
You can sow lavender indoors from February to April or outdoors after the last frost ( mid May ). The seeds will germinate in about 15 to 20 days.
Where and how to sow lavender?
Lavender can be sown in pots with regular, well-drained soil at room temperature. Keep the soil moist but not soaked. The first plants will be visible after about 15 to 20 days. Cover the lavender seeds with a thin layer of soil.
Where to Plant Lavender?
Lavender thrives in poor calcareous soil so there is no need to add any feed. The plant will grow and last for years in the garden. It is best to sow lavender in the fall so that the plant can come up vigorously again in the new year. Only give the plant some water when planting, after that it is no longer necessary. The lavender plant does not really like water.
Lavender seeds are small and dark black in color.

Lavender cuttings
Lavender cuttings are very simple. You should always cut healthy stems for rooting. The best time to take cuttings is after flowering. Cut a stem diagonally with a garden scissor about 5 to 10 centimeters from the plant and remove the top and the bottom leaves. Stick the cuttings in the soil and give it some water. The best time to do this is between July and September. This will give the plant enough time to develop roots. This phase lasts about 2 months, so starting a little earlier is no problem. Make sure that the cuttings remain moist. You can do this by covering the pot with a plastic bag. After a while you can open the bag for some ventilation. When the cuttings are large enough, you can move them into a larger pot or into the garden after mid-May.
Drying lavender
Drying lavender is also quite simple. Cut off the stems of the plant and place it in the sun to dry. After 1 day you can easily remove the flowers from the stems. You can put these wonderful smelling purple flowers in a little bag and place them in the bathroom, for example. It will smell great for a few weeks.
