Basil 'Dark Opal' is a variety of basil with dark red leaves and reddish stems.

The flavour of this variety is a bit spicier than normal basil. This variety, like the other basil varieties, is suitable for growing outdoors and in pots. Pot cultivation is recommended as these, in case of bad weather, are portable. Basil can be used in pasta sauces, meat dishes, fish dishes and in salads. Basil stimulates the appetite.

The leaves are used fresh, dried or frozen.

Making pesto from basil ’Dark Opal’:

The base of pesto is basil, olive oil and pine nuts. The pine nuts can, because of the price, be replaced by sunflower or pumpkin seeds, almonds, cashew, walnuts, or pistachios, if necessary. Each of course has its own flavour.

Grind the basil leaves with the olive oil and pine nuts. To add extra flavour, add garlic, pepper, salt and/or Parmesan cheese.

Sowing instructions

Basil seeds can be sown from mid-March to July. Either in a container in a warm place or, if the danger of frost has passed, outdoors in the open ground. Pre-sown basil can be planted outdoors after 5-6 weeks, once the danger of frost has passed. Maintain a planting distance of about 20 x 20 cm.  The use of fresh manure is not recommended as it negatively affects the plant's aroma.

Basil grows best in a warm and sunny spot, sheltered from the wind. The soil should be kept well moist while growing. Basil should definitely not be allowed to dry out. Too much water will cause the stems to rot and droop. Spray the leaves in hot weather. Basil is best grown in pots so that the herb can be brought inside during cold and bad weather.

Between July and September, when grown outdoors, it can be harvested. If the plants are indoors, this period is longer. Harvest only the lower leaves and young tops has the advantage that the plant retains its shape better and forms more side branches. The plant flowers in late summer. By removing the flowers, it is possible to harvest longer from the plant.
