Sweet Basil Seeds

Basil 'Dark Opal' is a variety of basil with dark red leaves and reddish stems.

The flavour of this variety is a bit spicier than normal basil. This variety, like the other basil varieties, is suitable for growing outdoors and in pots. Pot cultivation is recommended as these, in case of bad weather, are portable. Basil can be used in pasta sauces, meat dishes, fish dishes and in salads. Basil stimulates the appetite.

The leaves are used fresh, dried or frozen. 

Making pesto from basil ’Dark Opal’:

The base of pesto is basil, olive oil and pine nuts. The pine nuts can, because of the price, be replaced by sunflower or pumpkin seeds, almonds, cashew, walnuts, or pistachios, if necessary. Each of course has its own flavour.

Grind the basil leaves with the olive oil and pine nuts. To add extra flavour, add garlic, pepper, salt and/or Parmesan cheese.
