Growing and sowing Chinese Cabbage

Chinese cabbage is native to East Asia. It is a fast-growing type of cabbage that does not have the typical cabbage taste, but tastes slightly sweet. The taste is reminiscent of endive or chicory. It is a fairly easy vegetable to grow and can be harvested after about 3 months. Because Chinese cabbage can only be sown from mid-July, it is a great choice to sow it after another crop. This way, the same piece of vegetable garden can be used twice.

Growing your own Chinese cabbage from seeds

Chinese cabbage is an open leaf cabbage, which means it forms a loose head, as the leaves grow on stems. Both the leaves and stems are edible. Originally, this cabbage, also called Pe-tsai, comes from East Asia, just like Paksoi and Tatsoi, for instance.

There are green and red varieties.

It is an easy-to-grow variety of cabbage, which can be sown directly in the garden from mid-July. The plants tend to bolt quickly, especially in dry and hot periods. By sowing late and watering regularly, this can be avoided. Chinese cabbage is very healthy.

Sowing and planting Chinese cabbage

Chinese cabbage is best sown directly in the vegetable garden late in the season, for instance in July and August. It is possible to sow earlier, but then there is a greater risk of bolting. Keep a row distance of about 45 cm and a planting distance of 35 cm. If necessary, thin out a bit so that the right planting distance is achieved. This gives the cabbage enough space to grow well.

Position and soil

Chinese cabbage prefers a sunny spot, but it also does well in semi-shade. The soil should be fertile and not dry out quickly. If necessary, the soil can be enriched with compost. Do not place cabbages in the same spot more than six years, but alternate. As cabbage plants like to be eaten by, for example, pigeons, caterpillars and snails, it is advisable to cover the plants with netting.

How to care for your Chinese cabbage plants

Chinese cabbage does not like drought, so water regularly, especially in hot weather. This will also reduce the risk of the cabbage bolting. If necessary, fertilise once. Chinese cabbage needs less nutrition than, for example, white or red cabbage.

When and how to harvest Chinese cabbage?

Chinese cabbage can be harvested two to three months after sowing. Preferably do this before the first frost. Chinese cabbage can withstand light frost, but the outer leaves can be damaged quickly. Protect the plant against cabbage flies by using cabbage collars, for example. Cut off the head just above the ground.

How to preserve Chinese cabbage

Chinese cabbage can be kept in the refrigerator for a few days to a week. Chinese cabbage can also be frozen, but first clean, cut and blanch.

Is Chinese cabbage healthy?

Chinese cabbage, like other types of cabbage, is very healthy and contains a lot of vitamin C. It also contains many other vitamins, fibers and minerals.

Tips to grow Chinese cabbage

  • Use a cabbage collar. This prevents damage from the cabbage fly. This can no longer lay eggs on the cabbage leaves because of the collar.
  • Cover the young plants with nets to prevent pigeons from eating the plants.
