Growing and Sowing of Pointed Cabbage

Pointed cabbage, like white, red and savoy cabbage, belongs to the head cabbages. It is the easiest to grow variant of the head cabbages. In addition, it is the softest in terms of both taste and texture and easiest to digest. It owes its name to its pointed shape. This type of cabbage grows quite quickly, but cannot be stored as long as the other head cabbages. By spreading the sowing over several weeks, harvesting can be done over a longer period of time.

Pointed cabbage belongs to the cruciferous family. It is a head cabbage, which means that the cabbage forms a kind of head because the leaves are tightly together. As the name suggests, the cabbage has a pointed shape. Head cabbages are biennial. In the first year the head is formed, in the second year it falls apart and long flower stems arise up to 2 meters high. It is a relatively easy to grow cabbage variety, is very healthy and versatile. Pointed cabbage also has a typical cabbage taste, but less than other cabbages. Because it easily absorbs other flavours, it can be combined well in numerous dishes.

Sowing and planting pointed cabbage
Pointed cabbage can be sown at different times, depending on when you want to harvest. Always keep a planting distance of about 50 x 50 cm.
For an early harvest, pre-sowing can be done in February, indoors or under glass. The plants can then be planted out in the garden in March or April and harvested from June to August.
For summer cultivation, pointed cabbage can be sown outdoors in March to May. If necessary, thin out the plants a bit. Harvesting can then be done in August and September.
Pointed cabbage is also suitable for winter cultivation. This means that sowing is done in August or September, in order to be able to plant out early in the spring of the following year. This gives the plants a head start and it can be harvested earlier, from March to May. Make sure the plants are in a sunny spot, which can easily be covered if it gets too cold. A greenhouse is also suitable for this. In this way, your vegetable garden is also used in the winter months.

Pointed cabbage does not like drought, so water regularly, especially in hot weather. In principle, extra nutrition is not necessary, the cabbage normally grows very quickly. So only give nutrients if the cabbages are growing poorly. Since pointed cabbage likes to be eaten by, for example, pigeons, caterpillars and snails, it is advisable to use row covers.
When and how to harvest pointed cabbage?
The cabbage can be harvested when the head is firm and has the size you want.
Pay attention to the weather forecast, if it rains a lot, there is a chance that the pointed cabbage will burst. In case of small cracks, harvest immediately. If the cabbage does crack, it is still edible for a short time.
How to preserve pointed cabbage
Pointed cabbage can be stored in a dry, cool place for a few days. This in contrast to other head cabbages, which have a longer shelf life. Freezing is possible, but first cut, wash and blanch. You can also make sauerkraut from pointed cabbage.
Is pointed cabbage healthy?
Pointed cabbage is super healthy and contains, among other things, a lot of vitamin C. Even more than white cabbage. It also contains various B vitamins, vitamin K and minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, iron, copper and zinc.
