Growing Brussels Sprouts
Brussels sprouts, are actually a special type of cabbage in which not one head of cabbage forms, but several small heads in the axils of the plant's leaves. Unlike ‘normal’ cabbages, the whole plant is not harvested at once, but only the sprouts that are the right size are removed from the plant. It allows the other sprouts to grow on. It is a popular autumn and winter vegetable. Early and late varieties are available.
Growing your own Brussels Sprouts from seeds
If you want to grow Brussels sprouts yourself, you will need some patience. It takes a relatively long time before the first Brussels sprouts can be harvested. But then you will be rewarded with a delicious vegetable, which can be eaten freshly picked from your own garden even in winter.
Sowing and planting Brussels Sprouts
Brussels sprouts can be pre-sown from April. Make sure the soil is moist but also well aerated so that no mould develops. The seedlings should not stand too warm. From mid-May, the plants can be placed in the garden with a row distance of about 60 cm and a planting distance in the row of about 40 cm.
Of course, you can also sow directly in the garden from May on. Sow about 0,5 cm deep at the same row distance as described above. Once the plants have developed the first small leaves, you can peck them at the correct planting distance. Do not plant other types of cabbage next to Brussels sprouts.
