Growing Cress

Cress is a sprout, belongs to the cruciferous family and is native to Africa and Asia. It is an easy-to-grow crop that can be grown both in the garden and also indoors. Every part of the plant is edible, but mostly only the leaves, which have a spicy taste, are used. It is used in salads, on bread with cheese, for example, or as a garnish. Cress is very healthy and contains many vitamins, among other things.
Sowing cress
Cress can be sown on the windowsill all year round. This can be done, for example, in a container with wet cotton wool, but there are also special germination jars, glasses and containers for sale, which make cultivation easier. We also have these in our range. In addition, cress can also be sown in the garden. It can be sown in open ground from March to September. Cress grows very quickly, so it is recommended to sow at different times to extend the harvest period.
Sow in rows with a row spacing of 10 cm.
Position and soil
Cress is very easy to grow. Indoors, it can be done on wet cotton wool or in germination jars, for example. No nutrition needs to be added. Make sure the place is bright, but not too hot. Cress prefers a sunny spot in the garden. It has no requirements for the soil and grows on all types of soil.
How to care for your cress plants
As far as care is concerned, cress is very easy. Keep the soil around the plant free of weeds and water in warm, dry weather. Fertilizing is not necessary.
When and how to harvest cress?
Cress grows very fast. Sown indoors, the harvest can often be done after just one week. You do this by cutting off the required amount. If sowing has been done in the open ground, it can often be harvested after two weeks. The plants can grow quickly and start flowering, after which the leaves taste very bitter. After flowering, the seeds can be harvested to be sown again. Sowing outdoors often results in a larger harvest.
How to preserve cress
Cress, grown on a substrate (bought at a grocery) can be kept in the refrigerator for about a week. Keep the substrate moist. Once harvested, it can only be kept in the refrigerator for 1 day. Cress is not suitable for drying, it loses a lot of flavour. You can freeze them, but the leaves will become very limp. It can still be used to flavour sauces or cook cress soup.
Is cress healthy?
Cress is very healthy and highly nutritious. It contains significant amount of vitamins (A, B, C, E and K), a lot of minerals and fiber.
Cress seeds in our collection
In our range we have different types of cress seeds, such as the regular, an organic variety and a broad leaf cress.
Tips for sowing Cress seeds
- Always keep the soil slightly moist.
- Don't sow everything at once, but with a few days to a week in between. This increases the harvest period, which is important because cress has a short shelf life.
