Growing and Sowing Kohlrabi

Kohlrabi belongs to the cabbage family. There are green, white or purple varieties. Young kohlrabi can be eaten raw, but cooked kohlrabi is also very tasty. If kohlrabi is harvested too late or there has been a long period of drought, there is a danger that it will lignify. Kohlrabi can be grown and harvested almost all year round and is healthy. Both the bulb and the leaves are edible.

Growing your own kohlrabi from seeds

Kohlrabi is a versatile vegetable that can be sown and harvested over a fairly long period of time. The vegetable can be prepared in many different ways and is very healthy. Please note that the bulbs can easily lignify if the weather is very dry for an extended period.

Sowing and planting kohlrabi

Kohlrabi is a fast-growing type of cabbage. Sowing can be done directly in open ground, but pre-sowing indoors is also possible. The advantage of sowing indoors is that the plants get a head start and can be sown earlier and later on transplanted in the garden.

Pre-sowing is possible from February to May and in July and August. If they have grown sufficiently, they can be planted out from May to September. From May to July, you can also sow directly in open ground. Of course, it also partly depends on the species and weather conditions.

Position and soil

Kohlrabi does not have many demands on the soil. It is best to prepare the soil in autumn by adding compost. The soil should not be too dry. Kohlrabi needs a sunny or semi-shady spot.

How to care of your kohlrabi plants

Kohlrabi needs little care. Just keep it weed-free and water regularly. Fertilise now and then. Kohlrabi also grows well on clay soil.

When and how to harvest kohlrabi?

When the bulbs are about the size of a tennis ball, they can be harvested. Then they are at their best and can also be eaten raw. The variety 'superschmelz' is a somewhat larger variety, it also has to be harvested a bit later.

How to preserve kohlrabi

Kohlrabi can be stored in the refrigerator for 2 to 6 days. If you wrap them in a damp cloth, they will last longer, up to about 2 weeks. Kohlrabi can also be frozen, but blanch first.

Is kohlrabi healthy?

Kohlrabi is a healthy, low-calorie vegetable. It contains a lot of vitamin C (more than in oranges), but also several vitamins B, E, minerals and folic acid. The leaves are also healthy and contain vitamin A.

Tips to grow kohlrabi

Because kohlrabi forms a taproot, it is difficult to transplant. Pre-sowing is therefore best done in large nursery pots, so that the root has a chance to grow and cannot be damaged during transplanting.
