Runner Beans
Runner beans, also known as string ore pole beans, should be grown in every vegetable garden. By growing them along bamboo sticks, for example, you create height in the vegetable garden. As a result, they take up relatively little space, which also makes them suitable for smaller vegetable gardens. And although you can harvest them later, compared to regular beans, the yield is usually very good. Of course, this depends on the weather.
Read moreRunner beans are sown along a climbing system. Bamboo sticks are usually used for this. Sow from mid-May to early July, but keep an eye on the outside temperature. String beans love heat, so if it is still relatively cold in May, it is better to sow later.
In terms of care, the string bean is an easy to grow plant. Watering occasionally and removing the weeds around the plant is sufficient. Regular harvesting promotes the growth of new beans.
Because the runner bean can be stringy, they are cut into small pieces before use. There are also species that are less stringy, such as the ’Emergo Stringless’. In addition, there are varieties that can be eaten as string beans and green beans, such as the ‘Neckarkönigin’.
