The leaves of these most sold herb seeds of the sweet basil can be used fresh and dried; store them well after drying. Basil adds flavor to many dishes, which are fairly neutral taste of themselves.

Basil, which is best known from Mediterranean dishes, can only be grown as an annual plant. They are beautiful, decorative plants. Fresh basil picked from home grown plants gives extra flavour to many dishes. The name basil (Ocimum basilicum) comes from the Greek word basileus and means king. It is impossible to imagine Mediterranean and Asian cuisine without basil with its aromatic leaves. It is mainly used in pasta sauces (basil is the main ingredient in pesto), with meat and fish dishes and in salads. It can also be used in pickling cucumbers. Basil is an appetite stimulant. The leaves are used fresh, dried (where some flavour is lost) or frozen.

Make your own pesto from basil:

Grind the basil leaves, add some parsley as well and cover everything with olive oil. This forms the base to which you can add all kinds of ingredients: a clove of garlic, pepper, salt, Parmesan, pine seeds or walnuts. Store the pesto fridge-cold in a sealed jar. For long storage, put it in small portions and then freeze. However, fresh pesto tastes best.

Sowing instructions

The basil seeds should be sown from mid-March to July in a propagator or indoors in a warm place and after 5-6 weeks, once danger of frost has disappeared, transplant outside or in a flower pot. Use of fresh manure is not recommended. This affects the plant's aroma. Basil grows best in a warm and sunny spot, sheltered from the wind. Plant the basil at a distance of 20 x 20 cm.

Keep the soil well moist while growing. It is recommended to grow basil in pots so that the herb can be brought inside in cold and bad weather. From July to September, it is time to harvest the lower leaves and young tops. The plant flowers in late summer; removing the flowers has the advantage that the plant retains its shape better and gets more leaves to harvest.
