Which seeds to sow in February

This month is perfect for preventive treatment of bushes. It's also the time to tidy up and check everything before the new season. Clean and grease your tools, change the oil in the lawnmower and electric milling machine or have them collected by the supplier who will clean them thoroughly again during the winter. Milling is a good thing to do between crops and after digging. But milling on clay soil will close the soil, so spade the soil afterwards as well. It can't hurt to aerate the compost heap by turning it over completely or mixing it with new material.

Which seeds can be sown in February?

It can be still quite cold in February. However, a plastic tunnel offers possibilities. For example, radish seeds and early lettuce seeds can be sown in a plastic tunnel. Spinach is also an option, as well as a line of carrots at the end of the month. If you like, you can sow cauliflower seeds for transplanting into the ground in April. Later in the month, leek, aubergine and pepper seeds can also be sown in the tunnel or elsewhere in a sheltered area. 

In the ground

You can start sowing broad beans in February. Keep the rows wide so that a row of dill ( that keeps black aphids away ) can be sown in later. 

Another variety that can be sown in the garden at the end of this month is the white onion.

The first tomato seeds can also be sown indoors or in a heated greenhouse. Next month they should be put outside briefly to harden off. 

In regions where frosts are no longer expected, other vegetables can also be sown. Indoors or in the greenhouse: peppers (let them germinate in the dark), aubergines, leeks (early), radishes, carrots and lettuce.

Forward-thinking growers are now starting to develop a growing plan, taking into account where the vegetables were last year.

Herb plants

A useful job in the herb garden is to control mint. This aromatic herb roots very strongly and this can take over the rest of the herb patch. You can remove some roots. In order to prevent the plant from continuing to grow, a partition can be made in the ground around the corner where the mint is grown. A simpler solution is to grow the mint in large pots and bury them. At the end of this month, annual herbs can be sown in a tunnel or greenhouse. If you have perennial herbs in your herb garden, such as sage, rosemary and tarragon, you can divide and transplant them now.
